Key West Flats Fishing

FLATS FISHING IN KEY WEST

saltwater angler key west fishing

With our mild winters, we usually don’t see too many cold days. This past week and this week has been the exception. The winds will be mild, but temperatures have dropped into the low 60’s. This will make for some extremely tough, if any fishing in the back country. Many of the flats species will run deeper for protection from the cold.  The GOOD news is, temps will jump back up into the mid to high 70,s next week. The waters temps will warm up a little and Bonefish and Permit should move back up on the flats. Guides are still catching juvenile Tarpon as well. Back in the basins, Sea trout, Jacks and Cudas are plentiful along with large Sharks. Larger Mangrove snapper are nice catch too and can be found alongside deeper ledge drops near channels or mangroves.

OFFSHORE FISHING IN KEY WEST

Offshore remains steady with mix bag of Bonita and Blackfin Tuna. There has been a lot of bait offshore which has brought a lot of the deeper species in tighter to the reef line allowing the yellow tail catch to stay busy. This time of the year the reef can be very productive if the weather allows for a trip out. With the windy weather coming this week-end, make sure to get out earlier before it hits us. As always, wishing you tight lines and fish boat side!

Saltwater Angler Fishing Report -Mid November 2017

Key West Fishing Report

The winds are staring to subside and the forecast for the next weeks looks great! The autumn Keys’ highs have been in

the upper 70’s with night time low 70’s.  However, the flats fishing over the past week has been a bit slow. The numbers of bonefish have started to decline due to the cooler fall temperatures which have begun to set in throughout the Keys. But, anglers have still been finding some scattered permit out to the west of the island on some of the larger flats. In addition, there have been a multitude of speckled trout, redfish, ladyfish, cravalle jacks, black tipped shark, and barracudas caught on grass flats in about 6 foot of water. The offshore bite has been good for those who venture out in the windy seas the past week; captains have continued to hammer the large yellowtail snapper on the reef. Plus, there are still been lots of tuna caught chumming with live pilchards in approximately 200-300 feet. Also, the sailfish have started showing up around the color change in about 50 feet of water. The sails have primarily been feeding on ballyhoo, which are extremely plentiful around the reef during the fall. We wish you tight lines and fish boat side; complements from the staff at The Saltwater Angler!

Key West Off shore Fishing

The Yellow tail fishing has been great just outside the reef line. Dolphin fishing has been sporadic this season. With most being found further out than normal. Nice size Tunas are also still being caught west toward the end of the Key West bar. It also has been a great year for Blue Marlin too. We’ve had many reports of 300-400 lb. releases all up and down the Keys. As always wishing you tight lines and fish boat-side!

Key West Fishing Report

Hello and Welcome from the Saltwater Angler.

With the winds and rain finally subsiding, more fishable weather is approaching. Getting an early start is key this time of key west fishing reportyear. The Tarpon bite has been steady from pre-sunrise till around early morning using darker fly patterns with just a little flash. Moving onto the flats with a good incoming tide just after the Tarpon bite will put you in play for hungry Bonefish and possibly a shot at a Permit. Using small tan to olive crab patterns will work for both species. When just targeting Bonefish, spawning shrimp patterns seem just as good as small crab patterns. I have had some good luck working the edge of the flats in just a little deeper water for large Jacks as well. Pound for pound, they are one of the top fighters you can have on a fly. Lobster season is just opened, so keep a watchful eye out for divers. They hunt for lobster in the flats too.

Saltwater Angler Fishing Report – June 2016

The weather patterns look good for the next 4 to 5 days of fishing. Moderate winds and little to no rain will make for some excellent fishing both off shore and back country. Next Monday things turn wet and windy for most of the week, so this week is a good time to get out there. The tarpon are still migrating north through the keys and many guides are having great success after a few weeks of very finicky tarpon. We had lots of fish, but many were just not

feeding right. Early morning and late afternoon remain the best time to get hooked up on these guys. This is shaping up to be a great year for Bone fish both east and west of Key West with many being caught over 7-9 pounds. When fly fishing small crab patterns or shrimp patterns in light tan have been working the best. The Permit are out there too, they have been just a little tougher this year than normal. With these guys crab patterns such as Merkins and Yarn crabs are a must. If you are on spinning gear, live crabs will work even better.

Offshore has been good for deep jigging Grouper and Mutton snapper over sea mounts and deeper wrecks. The Dolphin are out there, but many Captains are having to venture out a good distance to find them. The yellow tail snapper fishing has been excellent just outside the reef line in 60-100 feet of water. Tuna, Wahoo and Mackerel are just a little further west of Key West at the end of the bar. Remember to be safe and aware of the weather when venturing out. Good Luck!

Fishing Report – January 2016

Hello to everyone from the staff at The Saltwater Angler. It seems the weather has given  us a little break in the way of sunny skies and light winds for 1978840_10151991531536616_161043274_n
