Before you decide on a rod, here are some things to consider:
Rods for the Beginning Caster It is easy to feel the line load these rods making it easier to find the rhythm of the cast. The trade off is that they do not have the backbone of the more advanced, high end rods, makling it more difficult to make long casts into the wind. It is also more challenging to fight the faster, heavier and stronger saltwater fish with these rods.
Scientific Anglers Intro Outfit – An excellent choice to start with. An eight wt. two piece outfit for $120.
Reddington RS2 Outfit – Easy to cast and good for bonefish, redfish, snook etc.a great price for a complete outfit. Comes with rod, large arbor reel, line, backing and rod/reel carrying case.
Scott Voyager – entry level price. Two and three piece models available. Very easy to cast with surprising responsiveness.
Top Rods for the beginning to advanced caster While not as easy to feel the line load as the ones mentioned above, these are the most user friendly of the high end rods, and they have the backbone to throw a tight loop a long way into the wind.
Orvis TLS – Perhaps the best deal on the market. A high end graphite rod at a mid level price. Available with either a tip or mid flex. The mid flex loads further down the rod. It is easier to feel the line load, making it better for most beginners. Tip flex is a stiffer, faster action rod. Two and four piece models available.
Sage RPLXi – One of the most popular rods in a long time and now discontinued. Made with Graphite III. Easy to cast, moderate action. You can feel the rod load down to the top of the butt section. Good for those who like a slower, measured casting stroke. A great choice for beginners to expert. Two, three and five piece models available… still, but they are going fast.
Sage XP – A great all around rod. Lighter than the RPLXi with a faster action. Quick, fluid casting stroke. Made with Graphite IIIe. Two and four piece models available.
Scott STS (Saltwater Tactical Series Rod) – One of the most user friendly yet responsive rods on the market…moderate to fast action. A standard for many of the guides in the Florida Keys , these rods load quickly and easily for those short casts, but also have the backbone to turn tarpon tearing off the last of your backing. A great rod for those just starting out or for the experienced angler. Three piece only.
G. Loomis CrossCurrent Pro – A one piece rod… its one piece construction makes it the lightest rod on the market. Not as stout as the GLX CrossCurrent, but a pleasure to cast. Good for those quick, close shots and long smooth casts.
Rods for the intermediate to advanced caster These are stiffer, faster action rods. Need more line out to feel the rod load. Takes an experienced caster to get the most out of these rods and make the quick, close shots. These rods are not as user friendly… any mistake in the cast will be magnified in the behavior of the line.
Sage TCR – One of the lightest feeling and most responsive rods...very fast, crisp action with a good backbone. Made with Graphite IIIe. Fun to cast - a super charged XP. Available in 5,6, 8, and 9 Wt. Made in 4 piece model only. The 8 wt. is a great bonefish rod and is our best selling 8 wt. Good for intermediate to advanced casters.
Scott S3S – Scott's new superply rod is stiffer than their STS with a faster action. Still good for the quick close shots, but has more power to throw big flies into a stiff wind. Great choice for surfcasters as it generates the line speed needed to turn over larger flies thrown great distances. Not for the beginner angler as they are a bit stiff making it harder to feel the rod load. Good for intermediate to advanced caster. 4 piece only.
Sage Xi2 – New G5 (Generation 5) technology utilizes a graphite skrim. It is a lighter, more responsive, faster action rod than its predecessor, the RPLXi. Strong, powerful butt section, fast tip. One of the hottest rods on the market.
G. Loomis GLX – Possibly the fastest and lightest rod on the market – certainly in our store. Only the G. Loomis CrossCurrent Pro one piece is lighter. Very quick casting stroke generates tremendous line speed. Not for your average caster as this is a high performance rod designed for precision casting. Two and four piece models available, but the four piece models are being phased out.
G. Loomis GLX CrossCurrent – Made with the same material as the GLX, but the taper is designed specifically for saltwater flyfishing. It has more backbone to punch big, wind resistant flies a long way and to shorten the battle with even the largest tarpon. A littler bit heavier than and stiffer than the regular GLX. Can easily be over lined one weight to make it load quicker. A super saltwater rod, but not for those with a weak wrist. 4 piece only.
